About SBG UK
Part of the international Straight Blast Gym community founded by Matt Thornton in Portland, Oregon, SBG UK is a nationwide network of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts academies united by the principle of Aliveness.
The Origins of Straight Blast Gym
Straight Blast Gym was founded by Matt Thornton in Portland, Oregon. Matt created SBG as a non-political environment where martial artists could train openly, test their skills and discover what genuinely worked against resisting partners.
The emphasis was not on preserving a particular style or exchanging collections of techniques. It was on physical training: moving, sweating, sparring and learning through direct experience. That emphasis is why Matt called it a gym, rather than an academy, institute or school.
As the training evolved, methods that worked reliably against resistance remained. Methods that could not be applied in live practice were adapted or discarded. This process became central to the Straight Blast Gym approach.
At the heart of that approach is the principle Matt described as Aliveness: training that contains genuine movement, timing and energy. It remains the foundation of SBG training around the world.
SBG Comes to the UK
Karl Tanswell established SBG UK in Manchester in 1999, bringing Matt Thornton’s approach to training and Aliveness to a growing British martial arts community.
Karl developed a close relationship with Matt Thornton and the international Straight Blast Gym community. He regularly brought Matt to the United Kingdom to teach seminars and travelled to Portland, Oregon, to train, coach and participate in SBG camps.
In 2007, Karl received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt from Matt Thornton. He continued to develop coaches and athletes whose work would establish SBG academies throughout the UK and overseas.
SBG UK remains part of the wider international SBG community while carrying forward the coaching culture Karl developed in Manchester.
Explore the SBG UK LineageTraining for What Is
Straight Blast Gym was founded by Matt Thornton as a place where martial artists could set aside style, politics and ritual to discover what works against genuinely resisting training partners.
The philosophy that shaped SBG originated with Matt and the international organisation in Portland, Oregon. It remains the foundation of the training culture practised by SBG academies around the world, including SBG UK.
At its centre is a simple principle: martial arts must be trained Alive. Skills should be developed through movement, timing and energy against partners who respond realistically rather than cooperate with a predetermined outcome.
The following passage preserves Matt Thornton’s original explanation of the SBG training philosophy.
Attribution: The philosophy presented below was created and written by Straight Blast Gym founder Matt Thornton. It is reproduced here to preserve its original meaning and provide context for the principles followed by SBG UK.
The Original SBG Training Philosophy
The following philosophy was written by Straight Blast Gym founder Matt Thornton and is presented here as the foundation upon which the international SBG community was built.
SBGi Training Philosophy
The Straight Blast Gym was created as a non-political location where freedom to use, and discover what actually works in what “is” hand-to-hand combat could be expressed. It was meant as a place where athletes could gather and actually spar against uncooperative partners in all ranges, without worry of “style” or making what “is” combat into what we think it should be.
The training we are speaking of is not an exchange of techniques as such, but actual physical training, sweating, moving, “Alive” training. Hence the term Gym—not academy, institute or school, but Gym.
As the training progressed it began to evolve. All athletes that practise in an “Alive” manner—that is, against uncooperative training partners and not in kata, forms, patterns or drills—will eventually reach a natural state of evolution.
What you do will evolve to work in the environment that is combat. As such, what began as a semi-typical JKD Concepts curriculum evolved into what is now the current Straight Blast Gym curriculum.
The stand-up kickboxing game evolved and changed as the advent of takedowns and ground fighting was allowed in all sparring sessions. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu played a major and ever-growing role in the daily training.
The “trapping” techniques taught by most JKD and Jun Fan people were replaced with more effective methods of clinching and striking derived from Greco-Roman wrestling and Muay Thai.
Most of the “flow drills” typically referred to as “Kali” or “Escrima” drills were replaced with simpler Alive drills that actually reflected and enhanced the movements used in real-contact stick fighting.
Today, the Straight Blast Gym no longer claims to teach Filipino martial arts as such. Instead, we simply refer to what we do as stick and knife fighting.
The majority of our training now revolves around boxing, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, all of which has been adapted to work together and in the street.
The simple truth is that the reality of combat knows no national or cultural boundaries.
If you place any two Kung Fu, Karate, Jun Fan, Silat, Kali, Hapkido or similar practitioners into a cage and tell them they can only strike at each other, then what you would see would resemble bad kickboxing.
If you told them they could do anything they wanted, then it would resemble a bad vale tudo or NHB match.
A punch is a punch, a kick a kick, an elbow an elbow, a knee a knee, a choke a choke, a throw a throw and an armlock an armlock. It does not matter what part of the world it comes from.
If you do not spar—if your training is not “Alive”, but instead a series of dead patterns and “flow drills”—then what you do will not translate into actual fighting.
At the Straight Blast Gym, we don’t train to fight the way we think it should be. Instead, we train for what it “is”.
Free yourselves from the conformity of style, terminology and ritual. Spar against real opponents and always train “Alive”, and so can you.
In the end, that is really what JKD is supposed to be.
What Is Aliveness?
Aliveness is the quality that makes training functional. It means practising with a partner who moves, resists and responds with their own intentions.
Training With Realistic Resistance
An Alive exercise contains the same essential qualities found in sparring and competition. The partner is not simply allowing a technique to happen: both people are moving, adapting and attempting to achieve their own objective.
Movement
Both athletes must be free to move naturally. Distance, positioning, balance and direction are constantly changing, just as they do during sparring.
Timing
A technique must be applied at the right moment against a moving partner. Timing cannot be learned fully from a fixed sequence or a completely cooperative drill.
Energy
The partner provides appropriate resistance and genuine intent. The intensity can be adjusted for experience and safety, but the response must remain authentic.
Aliveness does not mean training at maximum intensity all the time. It means preserving movement, timing and energy at every appropriate level of practice.
SBG UK Today
SBG UK is a nationwide community of independently operated academies connected by shared coaching standards, a common training philosophy and a commitment to Aliveness.
Continuing Karl Tanswell’s Legacy
Today, SBG UK is managed and operated by UK President Matt Inman, working closely with Simon Kenny, who was a close friend of Karl Tanswell from 1994 until Karl’s passing in 2018.
They are supported by UK Vice President Casey Jones—Karl’s first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and the highest-ranking SBG UK black belt—together with Karl’s original black belts and experienced coaches from across the network.
The organisation also continues to benefit from the support of Ella Tanswell, Karl’s wife, whose connection to SBG UK remains an important part of its continuity and future.
This leadership and support structure has been recognised by Straight Blast Gym founder Matt Thornton as carrying Karl’s work and the SBG philosophy forward in the United Kingdom.
